    What Is a Digital Nomad?

Generally speaking, a digital nomad is a flexible professional who can work remotely giving them freedom to explore the world while working.

This term can apply to anyone who has an online job or business allowing them to use technology and communication tools to work and communicate with others from anywhere in the world.

Some nomads prefer staying in one location for a while before exploring a new location. Others love to hop from city to city or country to country more frequently.

These guys normally work from hotel rooms, coffee shops or cafes, campgrounds, and coworking spaces.  Irrespective of your desired setup, what you need to keep in mind is that your remote job or business should be able to fund your flexible lifestyle.

Another thing is that there is a difference between being location-independent and being a digital nomad. Unfortunately, these terms are often used interchangeably.

The main difference between the two is that a location-independent professional typically has a home base but has the option to work remotely from different locations on occasion. In other words, their jobs don’t tie them to a specific place or country, but they mostly live in one place.

A digital nomad, on the other hand, is anyone with a remote job or business that is location-independent but has chosen to travel on a full-time basis. Sometimes, these professionals sell their homes and live fully on the go.

Pros and Cons of Becoming a Digital Nomad

Pros of Being a Digital Nomad

As mentioned earlier, choosing a digital nomad lifestyle has several benefits. Here are just a few perks that come with being one:

    • Opportunities to meet new people: As you travel around the world, you will likely work in places where other digital nomads work, thus providing a nice environment for meeting new people and making friends.
    • Location independence: Being a digital nomad means having the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. That is why many digital nomads can travel between different destinations.
    • Exposure to different cultures: If you are going to travel to different countries or regions, chances are that you will experience new cultures, heritage, people, music, and food. Actually, there is a lot of learning, so you have to be open-minded.
    • Affordability: If you are living in an expensive country, you can relocate to a more affordable location. Most digital nomads in the US travel to developed countries with more affordable cost of living.

Other benefits of becoming a digital nomad are the escape from toxic environments of office politics, setting your own schedule including taking time off when necessary, broadening your mind through travel experience, and spending time in places with favorable climate.

Cons of Being a Digital Nomad

Digital nomadism is desirable by many, but not all of them are ready to adapt to the challenges that comes with being a digital nomad. Becoming a digital nomad is no easy fit.

Here are a few downsides of the flexible lifestyle:

    • Difficulty navigating visas: As you may already know, visa processes vary by country. Some have an easier application process, for instance, you can file your application online. Unfortunately, some countries require you to send your application via the local embassy or consulate in your home country.
    • No guarantee of stable income: While digital nomad lifestyle is desirable, sometimes you may experience uncertainty in your work and pay. This is usually the case when you are a freelancer.
    • Tax implications: Sometimes digital nomads may face challenges related to taxation of income sourced outside the US. That is why it is advisable to consult a tax professional who will advise on how to handle tax issues in your current location and at home.
    • It is hard work: Digital nomad lifestyle involves planning and handling travel logistics. Moreover, you may have to learn a new language.
    • Lonely: Another common challenge associated with being a digital nomad is loneliness. It can be hard not having coworkers that you meet personally. Also, you may feel like you are missing a lot, especially what is happening with your family and friends back at home.

How to Become a Digital Nomad

    1. Identify Your Skill Sets and Fine-Tune Them

To be successful as a digital nomad, you have to identify your current skills and the skills that you need to become a successful digital nomad.

After that, you should plan to strengthen your most marketable skills by learning from industry professionals or signing up for courses on platforms such as Udemy, Skillshare, and FutureLearn.

Some of the most marketable skills that digital nomads rely on include:

    • Coding
    • Graphic design
    • Web design
    • Teaching
    • Photography
    • Writing

Once you have acquired the required skills necessary to succeed as a digital nomad, the next step is to start building a portfolio and searching for relevant jobs.

To build a portfolio, use sites such as Wix and Squarespace.

They will help you design beautiful websites where potential employers and clients can see your work. In addition to that, turn to job boards to find relevant jobs.

There are tons of opportunities for remote workers, which are usually found in digital nomad jobs boards like We Work Remotely and Remote OK. Some common jobs that digital nomads excel in include:

    • Programming and web development
    • Graphic design

    • Teaching

You may also want to check for the above jobs in freelance sites like Fiverr and Upwork. Freelancing is available in several industries including publishing, writing, photography, computer programming, publishing, editing, and web design.

    3. Start Networking

The best digital nomads excelled because they supported somebody else, so you should not be afraid of reaching out to successful professionals in your field.

The earlier you start, the better. You can find these professionals on social media platforms like LinkedIn. You should also consider joining digital nomad communities such as Work Wanderers, Digital Nomads Around the World, and Nomadbase.

Not only these communities will help you become a better person, but they are also great for making connections and friendships.

    4. Organize Your Digital Workflow

Part of being a successful digital nomad is being organized. So, you should keep your digital workflow organized with these digital tools and services:

    • Payments: Bank transfers, PayPal, Payoneer, and Wise are the most common payment methods when working remotely or doing business online.
    • VPNs: Virtual private networks (VPNs) are essential for securing your internet connections. VPNs like NordVPN can secure your network while using public WiFis.
    • Accounting software: These programs will help you manage taxes and income.
    • Virtual mailbox: If you don’t have a permanent US address, then you might need a virtual mailbox.

    5. Break down Your Finances and Optimize Your Lifestyle

Successfully transitioning to a digital nomad lifestyle requires proper financial planning.

Your income should support your lifestyle including transportation, meals, accommodation, and internet access. Considering this, you should start cutting down on unnecessary expenses.

    6. Choose Your Destination

Next, consider your destination. The most important thing is to choose an affordable place. Besides this, you should also consider the quality of living you want to visit.

    7. Prepare the Necessary Documentations and

Once you know the place you want to visit, the next thing to do is prepare the necessary documentation. Some of the critical documents you need include:

    • Driver’s license
    • Passport
    • Any necessary visa or travel permit
    • Insurance documents including flight coverage, health, and travel insurance
    • Social security card

Is Digital Nomad Lifestyle Right for You

By now, you must have decided if a digital nomad lifestyle is for you or not. And if you are still hesitant about the flexible lifestyle, then now is the right time to make it happen.

Digital nomads are creating positive changes in the world around them by injecting creativity, new skills and empathy into evolving industries.
