Hello! Hola! Ciao! Kon’nichiwa!

Welcome to The Roaming Dev World. I am a Senior Software Engineer based in Nairobi, Kenya. I have been writing code and building software professionally for over 5 years. I am a wanderer, exploring the world around me every now and then as I work remotely.

This blog serves to capture my software development journey as a digital nomad (not 100% nomadic if I’m being honest) as I navigate different cities across Africa and the world.

Backstory

You are alive, but are you living?

A Wise Man

Someone randomly asked me this and when I could not outrightly answer Yes it bugged me for a few days. So many of us are alive but never living, I chose not to be one of them. My digital nomad life really began with that simple question. Let’s call it my villain story.

I was never one for the 9-to-5-seated-at-my-desk-all-day kinda jobs since I have always been productive at odd nightly hours, look away fellow devs. I was not a fan of official dress codes especially considering my roles have always had less than 20% physical meetings and sales pitches. On the brighter side, I have been lucky enough to work remotely for close to 3 years now for local and international companies in my day job as well as in my consulting roles.

All this to say, I had no reason to not go out and wander, explore and work from anywhere I want for as long as I have my laptop and a good internet connection and I LOVE IT!

Who am I?

If you are wondering about my identity, you can stop now. I will go by the Roaming Dev or RD for short for several reasons.

  • For starters, I’d love for my professional side to remain private, in honor of contractual obligations and the privacy of all my clients.
  • Secondly, as many software developers reading this will attest to, we are majorly introverts who spend a lot of our time seated in front of (and sometimes talking to) our laptops with mostly questionable interpersonal skills.
  • Finally, isn’t some mystery always good for the storyline?

What to expect?

As a senior software engineer and digital nomad, I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects for clients and companies across different industries. On this blog, you will come across:

The favorite pet.
  • The Roaming Dev Series. Coverage on the life of a digital nomad software engineer and their day-to-day working remotely.
  • The Devlog Series. Yes, Logs! Don’t we all love logs from our servers, code and production applications? A journal series of cool coding projects in my personal life that I am try to finish before buying the next domain for the next “great idea” I have.
  • Travel content. You will have a front-row seat to all the beautiful towns and cities that I visit from the lens of a software engineer.
  • Software development guides. Access beginner, intermediate, and expert-level coding tutorials and resources for free.
  • Co-working spaces reviews. As I roam around, I will document and review various co-working spaces and spots that I work from for anyone who wants to pick up the digital nomad lifestyle.
  • Troubleshooting Guides. Code debugging and general IT troubleshooting guides to get you off any stumbling block.
  • Recreation content. Once I clock off, I will indulge you in my life outside the code editor. Enjoy a dish of sports, gaming, food, and health content.
