Hello! Hola! Ciao! Kon’nichiwa!
Welcome to The Roaming Dev World. I am a Senior Software Engineer based in Nairobi, Kenya. I have been writing code and building software professionally for over 5 years. I am a wanderer, exploring the world around me every now and then as I work remotely.
This blog serves to capture my software development journey as a digital nomad (not 100% nomadic if I’m being honest) as I navigate different cities across Africa and the world.
Backstory
Someone randomly asked me this and when I could not outrightly answer Yes it bugged me for a few days. So many of us are alive but never living, I chose not to be one of them. My digital nomad life really began with that simple question. Let’s call it my villain story.
I was never one for the 9-to-5-seated-at-my-desk-all-day kinda jobs since I have always been productive at odd nightly hours, look away fellow devs. I was not a fan of official dress codes especially considering my roles have always had less than 20% physical meetings and sales pitches. On the brighter side, I have been lucky enough to work remotely for close to 3 years now for local and international companies in my day job as well as in my consulting roles.
All this to say, I had no reason to not go out and wander, explore and work from anywhere I want for as long as I have my laptop and a good internet connection and I LOVE IT!
Who am I?
If you are wondering about my identity, you can stop now. I will go by the Roaming Dev or RD for short for several reasons.
- For starters, I’d love for my professional side to remain private, in honor of contractual obligations and the privacy of all my clients.
- Secondly, as many software developers reading this will attest to, we are majorly introverts who spend a lot of our time seated in front of (and sometimes talking to) our laptops with mostly questionable interpersonal skills.
- Finally, isn’t some mystery always good for the storyline?
